Welcome!

The course will cover all the basic hand-building techniques; coil/sausage, slab, pinching, as well as throwing and turning on the potter’s wheel. You will also learn how to use formers, press moulds and hump moulds.

For those who already have some experience with ceramics, there will be the opportunity to try more advanced techniques.

Throwing on the wheel will be taught to two students at a time, and all will get the opportunity to practice. For those who wish to practice more on the wheel, additional time can be arranged.

As well as the building techniques listed above, you will be taught various decorative techniques; such as carving, burnishing, stamping, sprigs, and sgraffito. You will have the opportunity to experiment with slips, oxides, underglazes, glazes and wax resist to create interesting and unique effects.

By the end of the course, you can expect to take at least 5 finished pieces home, to have developed a broad foundation of skills to build upon and to have had a lot of fun learning!

The course will run for 8 weeks with a one-week break for the holidays. Each session is 3 hours long and you are welcome to arrive a little early and help yourself to refreshments; tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.
